WQ 13: My advocacy

Weekly Question #13: If you were to decide what advocacy would you like to campaign for as an advocate or being involved in a foundation, what sector of the society would you like to serve?

Most of the volunteer work I've done in the past always involved children, specifically orphans. So if I were to support an advocacy or a foundation, it would have to be for abandoned children. Specifically, I would love to help send one or two to school. I can't afford that, I know, but if given the opportunity I would love to, at least, be able to offer free tutorial services to children in orphanages or spend playtime with them, and of course, help raise funds to support them. Apart from academics, I would love to teach them about the performing arts...dancing, singing, theater. They'd get to harness their talents, learn discipline and creativity, and have fun at the same time. And then, maybe we could do stage plays for a benefit, too!

We've done something like this before. Back in college, our school theater arts guild and other volunteers reached out to our deaf-mute or hearing impaired friends at the Gulandi Center for Hearing Impaired at St. Michael's Village in Banilad, Cebu City through the university's Ugnayan ng Pahinungod program. We spent months learning sign language and our major project was a "variety show" of sorts showcasing the talents of our special friends. We had a successful staging at the SM City Cebu Entertainment Center. It was so much fun! The theater workshops that we facilitated were a blast. We taught them mime, experimental acting, street theater, ethnic dancing...everything! They loved it, and so did we! The project and partnership not only taught all of us about creativity, confidence and discipline, we also gained lasting friendships!

Doing this with children would be just as fun. I know a lot of these organizations are already doing it, and I hope they wouldn't mind an extra helping hand. It would be a fun advocacy worth spending my time on. I could even get my whole family, specifically Yaku and Tating, involved!

It's a dream...but I'm hoping to get there soon. It's my own little way of thanking the Lord for all the blessings He has bestowed upon me and my family.

Wow sis! I love this dream and I definitely share this cause. However, I'd want to help those unwed teenage mothers this time and encourage them to make their lives better in the future.

I love kids too and I would love to help them. Sometimes, I pity those street children that hang around Jollibee begging for food.

I love how your school was active in doing activities for kids. During my stint in college, we did health teachings to the community and mother's class, the proper nutrition and what not... It was just so disappointing that some where only present not because they wanted to learn, but because they wanted free food.

Thanks for the comment in PierrEzrah sis! Touched tuloy ako! hehehe mwaaah*

That is a very noble cause. I myself was a volunteer eons ago. We even went to Cebu and spent 10 days in a summer camp for special children we flown in from Manila. Maybe I should do free tutorials since that is what I actually do, except i get paid.

I am one with you in the fulfillment of this dream. We may just be an extra pair of helping hands but with noble intentions, we can do even more :)

Thanks for the answer.

WQ14 is on the way :)

Have a great weekend!

That is wonderful!! I wish you all the best - and admire you for taking on such a great cause...

Indeed a noble thing. There are many groups with little effort that can help children both locally and internationally. I might suggest starting by a look at the kind of work that UNICEF does.

Lady L, I advocate for anyone who wants to grow, to change, to live. The question is hjow does one make the decision to be available to truly serve in thaty capacity.

Many people want mentors, guides, advocates for all manners of existence- spiritual, emotional, financial- and the decision is not who do I want to advocate for, but how to I make myself ready to serve.
